What is Mala?

The word "Mala," derived from Sanskrit, means "garland." Traditionally, a mala is a string of beads used in meditation and prayer practices, especially in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga. It serves as a sacred tool for meditation, focus, and intention-setting. Each bead can represent a prayer, mantra, affirmation, or breath, with the mala aiding in counting repetitions and maintaining focus during meditation.

Malas typically contain 108 beads, a number considered sacred in many spiritual traditions. Other sacred numbers include 81 and 54. Various styles of malas exist, such as Japa, Zen, Tibetan, and Mantra malas, each with its unique purpose and form.

The Meaning of 108 Beads

In Vedic astrology there are 9 planets (7 visible celestial bodies, Ketu and Rahu), multiplied by 12 zodiac signs, resulting in 108.

Human Energy

In yogic philosophy, it’s believed that there are 108 energy lines (nadis) converging to form the heart chakra. In Ayurveda, it is believed there are 108 marma points (vital energy points) in the body.

Numerology

The number 1 represents the individual (self), 0 represents emptiness or completeness, and 8 symbolizes infinity or eternity, reflecting the interconnectedness of all things.

How to Use a Mala as a Meditation Tool

  1. Set an Intention: Begin by setting a clear intention or goal for your meditation practice. This could be a specific affirmation, mantra, or prayer that resonates with your current needs. Or simply use mala to count your breath

  2. Start Counting: Hold the mala in your hand, rest it on your index finger and use the thumb to gently move each bead. Begin at the guru bead and recite your chosen mantra or affirmation as you move to the next bead.

  3. Focus on Each Bead: As you move through each bead, focus on your breath and the meaning of your mantra. This helps to maintain concentration and deepen your meditative state.

  4. End of Cycle: When you reach the guru bead again, you can either continue the cycle or end your practice, depending on your intention and time available.

  5. Daily Use: You can wear your mala as a reminder of your practice and intentions throughout the day. The mala serves as a physical connection to your spiritual goals and helps reinforce your meditative state.

What is Talisman and Amulet?

A talisman is an object believed to hold magical properties or powers that can bring good fortune, protection, or other benefits to its wearer. Talismans are often imbued with specific intentions or energies, making them powerful tools for personal empowerment and spiritual growth.

An amulet is primarily used for protection against negative influences or harm. It is often worn to guard against misfortune or evil, rather than to attract positive qualities.

How to measure necklace or bracelet size?

To find your perfect necklace or bracelet size, follow these simple steps:

  1. Grab a Flexible Cord or String: Choose something easy to wrap around your neck or wrist, like a string or cord.
  2. Wrap the Cord Around Your Neck/Wrist: For a necklace, position the cord at your preferred length—whether you want it close to the neck or hanging lower. For a bracelet, wrap it snugly around your wrist - don't make it too tight.
  3. Mark the Spot: Hold or mark the spot where the cord meets the end of the loop around your neck or wrist.
  4. Measure with a Ruler: Lay the cord flat and use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the length from the start to the marked point. This measurement will give you your ideal necklace or bracelet size.
